In the fashion and footwear industry, sales discounts are never a fixed number: they change by customer, season, channel and agreed payment terms. Handling this variability within the standard logic of an ERP can become complex, especially when discounts must stay consistent from the order all the way to the posted invoice.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central natively provides two discount mechanisms, the line discount and the invoice discount, but on their own they are not enough to cover every commercial need of a structured fashion company.
ModaSuite365 extends this native logic with tools designed for the industry: composable successive discounts on the line, more robust invoice discount management and direct integration with sales price lists. In this article we look at how they work, which needs they cover and how they are set up.
Why sales discounting is a critical topic in fashion
The commercial needs of the fashion industry
Every fashion brand applies different commercial terms depending on the customer, the product line, the season or the sales channel. A long-standing customer may have an agreed flat discount; an end-of-season collection may call for an additional discount; an advance payment may entitle the customer to a further reduction.
Holding all these variables together, while keeping discounts traceable and consistent from quote to invoice, is the real operational challenge.
Line discount and invoice discount in Business Central
Business Central natively manages the line discount and the invoice discount, the latter following a more complex logic because it is tied to the document total.
These are solid tools, designed to cover the most generic cases. To meet the more specific needs of the fashion industry, such as combining several discount percentages on the same line or keeping the invoice discount percentage stable when quantities change, ModaSuite365 extends these native features with dedicated tools.
How ModaSuite365 manages sales discounts
Successive line discounts: the Compound Discount
In the language of trade, particularly in B2B and wholesale, applying several discount percentages one after the other is known as successive discounts (or chain discounts). In Business Central this mechanism is called the Compound Discount: it is the line discount that ModaSuite365 recommends as the standard commercial discount.
It is set in the order header as the Default Compound Discount, inherited from the customer master data or its special conditions, and carried over automatically to all the lines.
Its main characteristic is precisely the succession of discounts: entering, for example, 5+2 applies a 5% discount first and then a further 2% on the already-discounted amount. The result is therefore not a simple 7%, but a slightly lower value of about 6.9%, because the second discount is applied in sequence on top of the first.
When you need to differentiate the discount on one or more lines from the rest of the order, you use the Forced Compound Discount: a value that overrides the default on that line only, while the rest of the order keeps following what is set in the header.
If instead the Default Compound Discount in the header is changed, the system re-validates and automatically recalculates all the lines that have not been forced. This discount is shown on the printout at the single-line level and carried through to the posted sales invoice.
The invoice discount: Payment and Manual Invoice Discount
The second family of discounts is the invoice discount: an unconditional discount applied to the document total rather than to the single line. ModaSuite365 manages it in two alternative ways, which are never used together:
- Payment Invoice Discount: linked to the payment terms. A discount percentage can be associated with an advance payment; it is retrieved automatically and stays fixed through to the posted invoice.
- Manual Invoice Discount: a feature that manages the invoice discount as a percentage rather than as an amount, so the value stays stable even when order quantities change, without, for example, a 3% turning into 2.75%. The percentage is set directly in the header and is always recalculated correctly.
Unlike the line discount, the invoice discount does not appear next to each line on the printout, but only at the document total.
Discounts through the sales price lists
A third level of management goes through the sales price lists (Sales Price List). Each price list has an Assign-to Type field that defines its scope of application: single customer, Customer Price Group or Customer Discount Group.
The difference between the last two is substantial: the Customer Price Group retrieves a sales price, while the Customer Discount Group retrieves a line discount percentage. A customer can have both associated on their master record, so that different discount percentages can be applied to different models while keeping a single reference price list.
The two setups that govern discounting
Before working on orders, ModaSuite365 requires two initial configurations:
- Setup Discount Management: here you enable the Forced Unit Price, which locks the order's unit price on the invoice even in the presence of automatic recalculations, and set the Message Type for Different Invoice Discount to Error, so that a customer does not receive an invoice with an inconsistent invoice discount across different shipments.
- MDS Price Calculation Setup: ensures that the MDS Price Management unit is used for price calculation, so that price lists and discounts are applied correctly.
Operational benefits
- Guaranteed consistency: the discount percentage stays stable even when the quantities in the order change.
- Full traceability: every discount is visible on the printout, at line level or at document total depending on its type.
- Commercial flexibility: different percentages by customer, product category, season or payment, without leaving the standard Business Central flow.
- Fewer manual errors: discounts come from master data and configuration, rather than from free-form entries prone to oversights.
How it is implemented
- Analysis of the company's current commercial policies (discounts by customer, channel, season, payment).
- Configuration of the Setup Discount Management and the MDS Price Calculation Setup.
- Setting default discounts on customer master records (Default Compound Discount, linked payment terms).
- Building the sales price lists and linking them to Customer Price Groups / Customer Discount Groups.
- Testing on a set of real orders, checking consistency between order, invoice and printouts.
- Training of the sales and administration teams, go-live.
With ModaSuite365, sales discounting stops being an exception to handle manually and becomes a structured process: composable on the line, stable on the invoice and integrated in the price lists. A single framework that accompanies the discount from the order to the posted document, with no surprises.
